چکیده

We present a theoretical interpretation of the broad silicon and iron ultraviolet absorption features observed with the Hubble Space Telescope in the spectrum of the Schweizer-Middleditch star behind the remnant of Supernova 1006. These features are caused by supernova ejecta in SN1006. We propose that the redshifted Si II 1260 Å feature consists of both unshocked and shocked Si II. The sharp red edge of the line at 7070 km s indicates the position of the reverse shock, while its Gaussian blue edge reveals shocked Si with a mean velocity of 5050 km s and a dispersion of 1240 km s, implying a reverse shock velocity of 2860 km s. The measured velocities satisfy the energy jump condition for a strong shock, provided that all the shock energy goes into ions, with little or no collisionless heating of electrons. The line profiles of the Si III and Si IV absorption features indicate that they arise mostly from shocked Si. The total 1 Based on observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS 5-26555.

We present here the computer model of the distribution of the lumi-nosity, produced by old isolated neutron stars (OINSs) accreting from the interstellar medium (ISM). We show, that for different mean velocities of OINSs the distribution of the luminosity has a torus-like structure, with the maximum at ≈ 5kpc.

Using our photoionization code CIRRUS [1], we show that the study of proximity effect on metal elements provides a possibility of placing constraints on the spectral shape of the metagalactic UV background (MUVB). From theoretical point of view, the most optimum indicator of the spectral shape of the MUVB is the ratio O iv/O iii. Unlike previous thought, the ratio Si iv/C iv is not a good indic...

We have compared the frequency of high-redshift Hydrogen HI 21 cm absorption with that of associated molecular absorption in two quasars to place new (1 sigma) upper limits on any variation in y ≡ gpα 2 (where α is the fine structure constant and gp is the proton g-factor) of ∆y/y < 5 × 10 −6 at redshifts z = 0.25 and z = 0.68.

X-ray spectra of a significant fraction of cooling flow (CF) clusters of galaxies indicate the presence of large columns of " cold " absorbing gas. The physical nature of the absorbing medium remains a mystery. Searches for H I absorption using the 21 cm hyperfine structure line yielded null results in most cases. The purpose of this contribution is to point out that the Lyman α absorption cros...
